Let's be honest, PR has a pretty bad reputation. But the practice of public relations should be about producing messages that cultivate healthy relationships between an organization and its publics. Where does spin fit into this equation? It doesn't. PR has a bad reputation because too many organizations do it badly. PR from the inside out is much more than spin.
Too many PR practices focus on crisis response. In fact, my pet peeve with most basic PR textbooks is that they designate an entire chapter to crisis response rhetoric but neglect the other critical components of organizational message production. It's these other components that, if addressed, could help avoid crises to begin with.. The idea of PR from the inside out is to remind us that effective public relations is a management function. You don't have to be a PR practitioner to do it well. It's a skill every organizational leader should know and use. It is the cornerstone of successful organizations. Effective PR is the production of 1) internal rhetoric, 2) image / identity rhetoric, 3) issues rhetoric, 4) risk rhetoric and 5) crisis rhetoric that defines who we are and aligns it with what we do.
