Persuasion
Influencing others effectively
Framing your topic for persuasive effectiveness.Persuasion is difficult. It's difficult to change behaviors, beliefs, opinions. It can not only fail but actually backfire by triggering resistance to your message. Careful audience analysis is essential to building effective persuasive messages. But knowing the audience won't help your efforts if you don't apply what you know. Begin by framing the topic with the audience in mind.

Fear AppealsWe often try to influence others through fear appeals and warnings. We tell highlight bad outcomes if they don't change their behavior. For example we tell smokers "those things will kill you." But these appeals trigger negative feelings and we avoid negative feelings. Think about those ASPCA commercials with the sad music and images of abused dogs. What do you do? Most of us change the channel. Positive appeals are much more effective at influencing others.
